SRSG calls for immediate direct aid to alleviate suffering in Somalia
Nairobi, 14 May 2009: The UN Special Representative for Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, has accused the extremists who are attacking Mogadishu of being directly responsible for the current suffering and misery of tens of thousands of Somali civilians.“The Somali extremists and their foreign allies started this latest fighting which has led to the deaths and displacement of ordinary Somalis, many of whom only recently returned home hoping to restart their lives,” said Mr Ould-Abdallah. “In their attempt to seize power, these extremists have clearly shown their lack of regard for their innocent Moslem brothers and sisters.”[English] [Somali]

SRSG accuses Somali fighters of launching an attempted coup
Nairobi, 13 May 2009: The UN Special Representative for Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, has accused those who launched the recent attacks on Mogadishu of carrying out an attempted coup d’état to topple a legitimate government using force.“It has been widely condemned by the international community and regional organizations,” Mr. Ould-Abdallah said.“These extremists know that they do not have the support of the Somali people and that is why they have to bring in foreign fighters who are not connected to the situation in Somalia in any way.[English] [Somali] ....................................................................................................

Addis Ababa, 12 May 2009: The UN Special Representative for Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, has strongly condemned the continuing aggression in Mogadishu targeted at the legitimate Government of Somalia. He said the violence, which has led to the deaths and displacement of a large number of civilians, was completely unacceptable.“There must be an immediate end to this fighting,” said Mr Ould-Abdallah. “There is now a legitimate, internationally recognized Government in Mogadishu which should be supported.[English] [Somali]

The International Conference in support of the Somali Security Institutions and the African Union Mission in Somalia was convened by the United Nations Secretary General following the request of the UN Security Council in its resolution 1863 of 16 January 2009 under the joint auspices of the African Union and United Nations and hosted by the European Commission and the European Union. The Conference, which took place in Brussels from 22 – 23 April, was co-chaired by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the African Union Chairman, Jean Ping. [Communique]
