The Food Security Analysis Unit (FSAU)
..............................................................................................

The Food Security Analysis Unit (FSAU) is managed and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) with funding from the European Commission (EC) and from USAID for the nutrition component of FSAU.

FSAU provides comprehensive and in-depth information and analysis on the food security situation and nutrition status of people living in Somalia.

By understanding the underlying causes of food insecurity and the impact of emerging and evolving food security problems, FSAU can provide technical assistance into both short term emergency food relief interventions and medium to long term planning and programming (by UN agencies, donors, NGO's and the Somali people) aimed at strengthening Somali coping capacity.

Analysis is based on qualitative and quantitative information collected on a monthly basis, through a network of 22 experienced and qualified Somali field monitors. Specialized partner agencies provide additional data which is assimilated into the process of information analysis at FSAU headquarters in Nairobi.

Regular monitoring by field monitors highlights any specific requirement for additional ad-hoc analysis activities of vulnerable populations and enables the FSAU to produce timely and reliable early warning alerts. FSAU information products and services include publications, maps, vulnerability assessments, food security briefings and updates and a food security integrated data base. These are designed to meet the requirements of the broad range of users of food security information in Somalia.

FSAU is working with a range of UN agencies, INGO's, NGO's and the Somali people to improve food security and strengthen Somali livelihoods.
