Founded in 1948, as a specialized agency of the United Nations, the World Health Organization leads the world alliance for Health for All. WHO promotes technical cooperation for health among nations, carries out programmes to control and eradicate disease and strives to improve the quality of human life. Its four main functions are to:
- give worldwide guidance in the field of health;
- set global standards for health;
- cooperate with governments in strengthening national health programmes;
- develop and transfer appropriate health technology, information and standards.

WHO works towards polio eradication; strengthening routine immunisation; controlling and reducing the prevalence of diseases; providing essential drugs to health facilities, all aimed at strengthening the health care delivery system.
